FIRST Robotics Canadian Women in STEM Scholarship

The FIRST Canada Scholarship Committee is accepting applications for the “Canadian Women in STEM Award.” Canadian female students who are team participants in the 2023-2024 FIRST Robotics Competition or FIRST Tech Challenge program in Canada are encouraged to apply. One scholarship will be awarded per school calendar year and announced in 2024. Our mission with this scholarship is to level the playing field for motivated girls to pursue meaningful careers in STEM and feel empowered to inspire and remove barriers for other young women. It is our dream that with this scholarship, we can work towards a future that truly values and celebrates the contributions and successes of all women in STEM.

Aim and Benefits of FIRST Robotics Canada Canadian Women in STEM Scholarship

The annual $10,000 FIRST Canada Canadian Women in STEM Scholarship, sponsored by the Murai family, is awarded annually to one young woman in robotics who demonstrates a deep dedication to the advancement of equity, diversity, and inclusion in STEM through impressive leadership and a strong passion for the field.

Requirements for FIRST Robotics Canada Canadian Women in STEM Scholarship Qualification

To be eligible for the scholarship, candidates must:

  • Complete and submit the application form no later than 11:59 p.m. (ET) on January 31, 2024 date;
  • Be currently enrolled, or have been enrolled, in a Canadian high school.
  • Participated on a FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) or FIRST  Tech Challenge (FTC) team in Canada (2023-2024)
  • Be eligible to enrol, and agree to enrol, as a full-time student in an accredited college or university starting no later than the fall semester of 2024 and
  • Use the scholarship to pursue a major or degree program in engineering or science at a college or university.
  • Be a student who is a dedicated role model in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math)

How to Apply

Interested and qualified? Go to FIRST Robotics Canada on firstroboticscanada.org to apply

To apply for the Scholarship, you must provide each of the following documents to the FIRST Scholarship Committee no later than 11:59 p.m. (ET) on January 31, 2024:

  • Your completed application form (indicate on the form which event you/your team are attending)
  • A letter of recommendation from a high school instructor from whom you have taken one or more classes
  • A brief essay (no more than 500 words) in which you discuss your desire to be a STEM role model, your participation in the FIRST Robotics competition, and the program’s impact on your life. What sets you apart from others? Have you experienced adversity as a woman in STEM, and how did you overcome that and use it to your benefit? How are you making a difference, and what is your plan moving forward?
  • Your official high school transcript

If you are a home-schooled student, please get in touch with the FIRST Scholarship Committee for instructions on what materials you should provide in place of a letter of recommendation and transcript.
