Aim and Benefits of University of British Columbia Mackenzie King Scholarships

The Open Scholarship is available to graduates of Canadian universities who pursue graduate study in any discipline, in Canada or elsewhere.  One Open Scholarship is awarded each year. The value has recently been about $12,000 but it is subject to change.

The Travelling Scholarship is available to graduates of Canadian universities who pursue graduate study in the United States or the United Kingdom in the areas of international relations or industrial relations.  Recently four scholarships of $13,500 each have been awarded annually, but the number and the amount are subject to change.

Requirements for University of British Columbia Mackenzie King Scholarships Qualification

  • The Mackenzie King Open Scholarship is open to graduates of any Canadian university who engage in (commence or continue) graduate study (master's or doctoral) in any field, in Canada or elsewhere.
  • The Mackenzie King Travelling Scholarship is open to graduates of any Canadian university who engage in (commence or continue) graduate study (master's or doctoral) in the United States or the United Kingdom, of international relations* or industrial relations (including the international or industrial relations aspects of law, history, politics and economics).
  • Important: You must be a graduate (holder of a degree) of a Canadian university when tenure of the scholarship begins (typically in September).  If you will not be a holder of a Canadian degree by September 2024, you are not eligible to apply.  This nuance in the eligibility requirements is the primary reason for rejected applications.
    • For example, a student whose prior degrees are from international institutions but is currently studying at UBC (and is applying for the scholarship to fund their current UBC degree) would not be eligible to apply, as they are not a holder of a degree (graduate) of a Canadian university.

The Mackenzie King Selection Committee interprets both terms broadly. The program does not have to be called “international relations” or “industrial relations.” For example, studies in Law, History, or Development Studies qualify as international relations as long as they are focused to a substantial extent on relationships between states.

Other funding

A candidate may not hold a Mackenzie King Scholarship at the same time as other scholarships without the written approval of the Board of Scholarship Trustees.  This approval is usually given provided that the candidate’s total scholarship support, including the Mackenzie King Scholarship, does not exceed a maximum amount defined by the Board. Lately the maximum amount has been the candidate’s expected tuition fees plus C$18,000, but it is subject to change.
