The Burman University Orchestral Scholarship is designed to help students wanting to study music while specializing in an orchestral instrument. This scholarship is funded by donations.

Benefits

  • Scholarships are awarded 50% each term. So an $8,000 scholarship would be awarded with $4,000 in the Fall, and $4,000 in the Winter semester.

Requirements

  • Applicants must attend Burman University in the Fall and Winter semesters immediately following their scholarship submission.
  • Applicants must audition for and register in each fall and winter term, for either credit or audit, in the Music Department's Orchestra, Camerata Ensemble, or other approved group.
  • Applicants must register for and complete 12 credits each term.
  • This award is open to Canadian and International students.
  • If no satisfactory submission is made the scholarship may not be awarded.
  • Preference will be given to a student entering a music program, but any student who meets the criteria is eligible.

Application Deadline

How To Apply

  • Submit a video recording of yourself playing one of the approved pieces using an orchestral instrument. Your submission will be adjudicated by the professors of the Burman University Music Department who will then select the winner of the scholarship.
  • A list of approved pieces can be found here: OrchestraExcerpts.com
  • Other orchestral pieces may be accepted with the discretion of the Burman Music Department.
  • Your chosen instrument must be one of the following:
    • Strings: Violin, Viola, Cello, or Double Bass.
    • Woodwinds: Flute, Oboe (or English Horn), Clarinet, or Bassoon
    • Brass: French Horn, Trumpet, Trombone, Euphonium, or tuba
    • Percussion: Marimba or Timpani
