The scholarships are awarded primarily on the basis of academic excellence and the relevance of the research project to the stated objective, as well as leadership and community involvement.

The Canadian Dam Association (CDA) is a group of owners, operators, regulators, consultants, suppliers and academics interested in dams and reservoirs. CDA provides a forum for the exchange of ideas and experience in the field of dam safety, public safety and protection of the environment.

Aim and Benefits of Canadian Dam Association (CDA) Gary Salmon Memorial Scholarship

The CDA Gary Salmon Memorial Scholarship, valued at $6,000 was established in 2009 in honour of the late Gary Salmon, P.Eng and is awarded to the selected applicant registered as a full-time student in a Ph.D program at a Canadian university.  


Requirements for Canadian Dam Association (CDA) Gary Salmon Memorial Scholarship Qualification

  • Applicant must be registered as a full-time student in a Ph.D program at a Canadian university.  


Documents Required for Application

Applicants must submit to the Chair of the CDA Honours and Awards Committee a completed application form along with the following supporting documents

  • The title and a 500 to 1,000 word synopsis of the applicant’s Ph.D or Master degree research project, or Master degree project, including the expected outcome and how it will improve the current state-of-practice in regards to dam safety and/or the management of dams.
  • A 500 word summary of the applicant’s community involvement, leadership roles, volunteer activities and/or participation/contribution to the arts, sport or cultural community.
  • Official transcripts for undergraduate and graduate courses. Arrangements may be made to have the transcripts forwarded directly by the institutions to the
  • Chair of the CDA Honours and Awards Committee ([email protected]) or by mail to the CDA office.
  • Electronic copies (PDF format) of any technical papers prepared on and related to  the topic of the project or research in progress, that have been either published  in a Conference or a Journal, or accepted technical paper (confirmation of  acceptance letter or e-mail required for papers yet to be published). Copies of  technical papers are suggested but are not mandatory. 
  • A letter from the program chairman/director that:
    • endorses the application/applicant;
    • confirms the applicant’s start date in the program and anticipated completiondate; and
    • other relevant information related to the applicant’s progress towards project completion and/or thesis defense if applicable.
  • Two letters of reference that address the applicant’s academic performance and their contribution to the community
    • One letter on academic achievements, and
    • A second letter on the volunteer activity and community  contributions
