Canadian Institutes of Health Research Canada Graduate Scholarships Doctoral Award: 2024-2025

The Canada Graduate Scholarship Doctoral (CGS D) program supports and promotes research excellence in a wide variety of disciplines and broad fields of health, natural sciences and engineering, and social sciences and humanities, including interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research. This support allows scholars to more fully concentrate on their doctoral studies, to seek out the best research mentors in their chosen fields and contribute to the Canadian research ecosystem during and beyond the tenure of their awards. 

The objective of the Canada Graduate Scholarships – Doctoral (CGS D) Program is to: promote continued excellence in Canadian research by rewarding and retaining high-calibre doctoral students at Canadian institutions. By providing support for a high-quality research training experience to awardees, the CGS D program strives to foster impacts within and beyond the research environment.

Aim and Benefits of Canadian Institutes of Health Research Canada Graduate Scholarships Doctoral Award

As of result Budget 2024, funding levels are expected to be adjusted following the launch of this Funding Opportunity.

CIHR and partner(s) financial contributions for this initiative are subject to availability of funds. Should CIHR or partner(s) funding levels not be available or are decreased due to unforeseen circumstances, CIHR and partner(s) reserve the right to reduce, defer or suspend financial contributions to awards received as a result of this funding opportunity.

The total amount available for this funding opportunity is $27,300,000 million. Of this $27,300,000:

  • Approximately $26,250,000 over three (3) years will be available for the open Canada Graduate Scholarships Doctoral competition; enough to fund approximately 250 awards.
  • $1,050,000 will be available over three (3) years to fund at least ten additional awards to support meritorious Black Scholars.
  • The maximum amount per award is $35,000 per year for up to [three (3) years. Award funding is allocated as follows:
    • Training stipend: $35,000 per annum

Applicant self-identification information may be used by CIHR to consider individuals for designated funding, should it become available.


Requirements for Canadian Institutes of Health Research Canada Graduate Scholarships Doctoral Award Qualification

  • For the purpose of this application, the Nominated Principal Applicant must be:
    • a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada or a Protected Person under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada), as of the application deadline date.
    • Trainee at the time of funding.
  • The Nominated Principal Applicant cannot hold a tenure or tenure-track appointment concurrently with their CGS D award. An awardee cannot be on leave from an academic appointment for the purpose of holding the award.
  • Applicants can submit a maximum of one scholarship (Masters or Doctoral) or fellowship application per academic year to either CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC. Nominations to the Vanier CGS program and applications to the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program do not count towards this limit (other exceptions may apply to CIHR internships).
    • If an applicant submits an application that does not follow these restrictions, the second application submitted will be automatically withdrawn.
  • Applicants cannot have already received a doctoral-level scholarship from CIHR, NSERC or SSHRC (does not apply to CIHR Fellowships).

When confirming eligibility of an applicant, CIHR counts all studies toward the doctoral degree for which funding is requested, whether or not they were completed at the degree-granting institution.

Conditions of Funding

In addition to the general conditions of funding governing CIHR awards, the following are the program specific conditions of funding applicable to this funding opportunity:

  • The applicant must consent to the use and disclosure of full application and nominative information at the time of application, for purposes of relevance review and/or funding decisions by the relevant sponsors.
  • Data related to First Nations, Inuit or Métis communities whose traditional and ancestral territories are in Canada must be managed in accordance with data management principles developed and approved by those communities, and on the basis of free, prior and informed consent. This includes, but is not limited to, considerations of Indigenous data sovereignty, as well as data collection, ownership, protection, use, and sharing.
  • This award must be accepted within 15 working days of the date of offer or the award will be cancelled and potentially offered to the next fundable applicant.
  • Awards will begin only after the recipient has registered in a full-time doctoral program and has provided official confirmation from the Registrar's office of their registration.
  • Applicants are required to obtain the research institution's signature.
  • Applicants must begin their award within 12 months of the earliest possible start date and start May 1, September 1 or January 1 following the offer of award.
  • A recipient of a Doctoral Research Award (DRA) with a health professional degree may apply to the Fellowship Funding Opportunity no earlier than the beginning of the last year of their DRA. If a recipient of a DRA with a health professional degree applies to the Fellowship funding opportunity for doctoral support before the last year of the DRA, funding for the currently-held DRA will be cancelled as of the first potential effective date of the Fellowship award, even if the application is not successful through the Fellowship funding opportunity.
  • If the candidate holds another federally-funded award, it must be terminated prior to the start of the CIHR Doctoral Award.
  • The Nominated Principal Applicant will be require to contribute to the monitoring, review and evaluation of CIHR's programs, policies and processes by participating in evaluation studies, surveys, workshops, audits and providing data or reports as required for the purpose of collecting information to assess progress and results;
  • The Nominated Principal Applicant will be required to encourage their associates, trainees and administration to participate in the monitoring, review and evaluation of CIHR's programs, policies and processes as required.
  • The Nominated Principal Applicants who are successful in this competition are strongly encouraged to actively participate in peer review, and as members of the CIHR College of Reviewers, when invited.
