The Liquor, Gaming and Cannabis Authority of Manitoba (LGCA) regulates liquor, gaming, cannabis and horse racing within the province. To support the development of research capacity in these fields, the LGCA offers a scholarship for eligible students conducting alcohol, gambling, cannabis or horse racing research at any post-secondary institution in Manitoba.

- MASTER’S STUDENTS $5,000 for one year
- DOCTORAL STUDENTS $10,000 for one year
Requirements
- Must be registered full-time in a professional, Master’s, or Doctoral program.
- Program must have a significant research focus.
- Must study at a recognized Manitoba post-secondary institution.
- Any academic discipline is eligible if the research is substantially related to LGCA’s regulatory mandate.
- Research can focus on alcohol, gambling, cannabis, or horse racing.
- Research may involve new research or secondary analysis of existing literature/data.
- A thesis or dissertation is normally eligible, but other research projects may also qualify.
- Canadian and international students can apply.
- Successful applicants must remain residents of Manitoba throughout the scholarship.
- The research proposal must clearly show how the research aligns with LGCA’s policy, regulatory, or public education mandate.
- Research on treatment of alcohol/cannabis dependence or problem gambling is not eligible.
Selection Process
Applications are assessed by an evaluation committee, which may include external reviewers. The committee’s decision is final and cannot be appealed. Unsuccessful applicants may contact LGCA for feedback.
