The Departments of Earth Sciences and Process Engineering at Memorial University of Newfoundland are seeking an exceptional Master’s candidate for a fully funded research opportunity focused on Geological Carbon Storage (GCS). The project begins in either September 2025 or January 2026, and will be supervised by Dr. Karem Azmy and Dr. Lesley James.

Requirements

• Must hold a Bachelor’s degree in:

  • Petroleum, Chemical, or Geological Engineering

  • Geochemistry, Geology, Chemistry, or related fields

• Candidates from non-English institutions must submit proof of English language proficiency

Preferred Candidate Profile

• Industry experience (asset)
• Familiarity with:

• Petrography, Diagenesis, Mineral Chemistry

• High-pressure/temperature experiments

• Rock & fluid characterization tools (coreflooding, PVT, SEM, XRD, etc.)

• Simulation tools and programming (PHREEQC, TOUGHREACT, Python, MATLAB, etc.)

• Motivated, collaborative, with excellent communication and research skills

Selection Process

Candidates will be selected based on:

• Academic excellence in a relevant field

• Research experience or strong interest in geological carbon storage

• Practical experience with relevant software (e.g., PHREEQC, COMSOL, CMG, etc.)

• Familiarity with lab techniques and equipment (e.g., SEM-MLA, porosimetry, rheometer, XRD/XRF)

• Strong communication skills and ability to work both independently and in teams

• Motivation for interdisciplinary collaboration

• Industry experience (considered an asset)
