The Durland Scholarships in Graduate Research are open to individuals from all backgrounds, irrespective of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, physical abilities, or socioeconomic status. Candidates who have overcome obstacles, demonstrated resilience, or contributed to promoting diversity and inclusion within their community will be given special consideration. The Durland Scholarships in Graduate Research are opportunities designed to attract and retain talented incoming students, within any of our PhD programs or research-based Masters programs, who show the highest potential to contribute to research supporting both the Major Research Thematic areas of the SMU Strategic Research Plan, and the research interests of SMU professors. The aim of the Durland Scholarships program is to build Saint Mary's University's strength, vitality, and reputation as a research enterprise.

Benefits

  • Approximately 20 scholarships in total (new and renewing students) will be disbursed each year. 
  • $15,000 for doctoral program students.

Requirements

To be considered for Durland Scholarships in Graduate Research, you must: 

  • Exceed the minimum admission criteria for the research-based graduate program to which they have applied
  • Scholarship selection will include special consideration of nominees’ planned area of research focus and alignment with priority research themes outlined by the University.
  • The University’s Strategic Research Plan should be used as the primary guide for identifying these themes
  • a nominee’s alignment with the faculty supervisor’s interests as well as the nominee’s perceived ability to contribute and complement a faculty member’s research objectives will be viewed as a key indicator of student research potential.

Interview Dates and Process

  • Have completed and submitted the application form for the Durland Scholarships in Graduate Research by or before the deadline of 5:00 pm AST on JANUARY 31, 2025.
  • Be planning to do research that is within one the 5 priority Major Research Thematic areas of the SMU Strategic Research Plan.
  • Have identified one or more professors at SMU who would likely support, or have expertise in, the area of your planned research.
  • Have a demonstrated record of outstanding academic achievement, and show evidence of research ability and/or potential. To promote accessibility, we also consider relevant professional experience of applicants in these assessments, recognizing that academic or research excellence can be demonstrated in various ways.
