STEP 1
Learn more about the Loran Award
Visit ‘How Loran is Different’ and consider attending a webinar to hear firsthand from scholars about their experiences.
STEP 2
Start your application
Begin your online application at apply.loranscholar.ca.
The application consists of short answers, several short essays, and two videos. You will be able to access the video questions only after you submit the written portion of your application. You must complete both the written and video components of the application before the deadline. You will also be asked to upload a PDF version of your eligible transcript or marks summary. Request this early and directly from your school guidance office, school board, or Ministry of Education (report cards are not accepted). Do not crop the PDF. Your full name, student number/ID, and the issuing body’s official letterhead must be clearly visible.
STEP 3
Confirm your referee
Identify a referee. This could be a teacher, coach, employer, or community leader. Referees cannot be family members or friends. Contact them as soon as possible to confirm their availability. Once you input their preferred contact details into the application portal, Loran will automatically email them instructions to complete a short online recommendation form. Input their information as early as possible to grant them ample time. It is your responsibility to ensure they submit before the final deadline.
STEP 4
Submit your written component
As an applicant, you will complete the written application, review its contents, and submit it. The written component involves some short-answer questions and several short essays.
STEP 5
Submit your video component and ensure your referee completes their recommendation
New for the 2027 Loran Award application cycle, after completing the written portion, all applicants will have the opportunity to express themselves in a video format. Your video submissions are timed, and you will not be able to review or redo them. You can access the video questions only after you complete and submit the written component of the application. See our tutorial on navigating the video component of the application.
Complete your application, review its contents, and submit it.
Note: your referee will be able to complete and submit their reference while you work on your application. As the applicant, you will complete the application, review its contents, and submit it. When you enter your referee’s contact information, email instructions will be sent automatically to them asking them to sign in online and fill out the reference form. The earlier you enter their contact information in your application, the more time your referee will have to complete the request. Your referee will need to submit a short (max 250 word) recommendation before the application deadline for your application to be considered complete and it is your responsibility to ensure this is done.
STEP 6
Track your progress
Once you have submitted your application, you can log back into the system to view the progress of your reference form.
