These awards have been established to honour the memory of Martha McKeown, a graduate of the Toronto Metropolitan School of Nursing class of '86. She finished first in her class receiving the JL Beaton Award in the process. She was very proud of this achievement, reminding her of it always gave her a boost when she was down. Martha was a dedicated and compassionate nurse, she touched many patients and families. She enjoyed teaching and was a mentor and role model to others. She took a particular interest in the health needs of pregnant women and mothers and their young children. She cared deeply about social justice and was concerned with the needs of victims of crime and abuse of all ages. The awards in her name are intended to recognize a student who best reflects the values Martha espoused and lived every day in her career
