University of British Columbia KNative Northwest Award for Musqueam Students 2024

The UBC Awards for Indigenous Students include scholarships and bursaries. When a student applies for these awards, they are considered for both merit and need-based awards. Scholarships are awards that recognize academic, community, or athletic achievement. Bursaries are based on financial need. Student awards based solely on financial need are not included on your official transcript.

Benefits

Awards totalling $2,000 have been made available annually through a gift from the Native Northwest Reconciliation Fund for Musqueam undergraduate and graduate students who have achieved good academic standing. Financial need may be considered. Native Northwest was founded by Larry Garfinkel (B.A. 1975, B.S.W. 1977) and Sandi Karmel (B.S.W. 1977) in 1983 and creates products and books for children that feature the work of Indigenous artists. The Native Northwest Reconciliation Fund supports justice for those who continue to be impacted by Residential Schools by funding initiatives such as community wellness, learning, and connection to culture. The awards are made on the recommendation of Enrolment Services.

Requirements

To be considered for UBC Indigenous awards, you must meet all the following requirements:

• You are a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or have refugee status.
• You are an Indigenous student. 
• You will submit the application for intended Indigenous awards by the award program deadline.
• You are enrolled in a full-time course load studying on the Vancouver campus.
• You meet the eligibility requirements as outlined in UBC’s Regulations Governing University Awards.
• You demonstrate financial need to be considered for bursaries.

Supporting Documentation

Some awards require you to upload documentation to demonstrate your eligibility with the organization giving the awards. Awards with requirements for supporting document will have a document upload option.

After you apply

• UBC will contact successful award applications by early December 2024.
• If you receive an award, funds will be applied directly to tuition with any remaining funds disbursed to you. You should ensure your direct deposit banking details are up to date to receive the award funds.
