Several $20,000 scholarships will be awarded to applicants who meet the specified requirements.
Requirements
To be eligible for the scholarship, the doctoral research project must relate to a subject directly linked to governance, such as:
- The importance of effective advice to promote good decision-making and better functioning of Canadian organizations;
- Governance issues of particular interest to Canadian boards of public and private companies, government organizations and not-for-profit organizations
- The role of organizational governance in achieving positive impacts on society
- Best practices in governance from a Canadian perspective
Here are some examples of suitable topics, but this is by no means an exhaustive list:
- Definition of the goal
- Stakeholder mobilization and the Board of Directors
- Corporate Culture Monitoring and the Board of Directors
- Equity and Inclusion and the Board of Directors
- Climate Change and the Board of Directors
- Renewal of Board Members/Term Limits
- Role of the President of the Board
- CEO Expectations
- Relationship between the board and the CEO
- Training and mobilization of administrators

Application Documents
To apply for the Bertram Scholarship, provide the following documents by May 26, 2025 :
- Please fill out the form
- A one-page summary of your doctoral research project, highlighting its application in the pursuit of good governance. Your summary should clearly indicate the connection between your research and expanding knowledge about organizational governance.
- A sample of your academic writing (not necessarily about governance)
- A letter of appreciation signed by your thesis supervisor (who must be a researcher and a faculty member of a recognized Canadian university) attesting to the overall quality of your doctoral work (the letter can be sent directly to the FCGR by the thesis supervisor)
- A letter of recommendation from another professor (the letter can be sent directly to the FCGR by the professor)
- A curriculum vitae detailing your academic background, publications, scholarships and awards, and teaching positions
- A short biography (approximately 100 words) and a short description of the research (approximately 100 words).
- A letter signed by a recognized authority within your university's scholarships and awards department signifying their consent to manage the scholarship on behalf of the FCRG. To manage the scholarship, we require the university to:
- Verify that the student is currently enrolled at the university
- Verify that the funds from the FCRG have been received by the university and paid to the student
- Notify the FCRG of any student leave request
