University of Laval François-Laviolette Scholarship for the Development of Responsible AI 2025

To support the work of Université Laval graduate students who advance knowledge in artificial intelligence (AI) with a view to responsible data use. These scholarships aim in particular to promote the interpretability and explainability of AI algorithms, with a view to improving trust in AI that offers strong accountability guarantees.

Benefits

Several scholarships from $7,500 to $10,000 ($7,500 for master's thesis / $10,000 for doctorate)

Requirements

  • Work on a project that contributes to the advancement of knowledge in artificial intelligence (AI) while prioritizing the responsible use of data. 
  • Have acquired a minimum of 24 credits at the master's or doctoral level at the time of submitting the application, and continue this same study program full-time at least in the following fall session;
  • Be enrolled full-time * (or be  deemed full-time according to Student Financial Aid ) in an eligible program at Université Laval during the fall 2025 and winter 2026 sessions (unless you are at the end of the program);
  • Have a minimum program average of 3.5 ** / 4.33 at the time of application analysis.

Part - time student ( 6 to 11 credits)  : If you are recognized as student parent under the terms of the Université Laval Student Parent Policy , you may be eligible for this competition. To this end, it is your responsibility to provide us with the certificate issued by the Registrar's Office by uploading it to the appropriate section of the form . Please note that it may take 7 business days to obtain this document.

Student with an average between 3.33 and 3.49  calculated on 12 credits or less  : You can submit your application to this competition by explaining, in the “Comments” section of the form, the reasons or particular situations which may have had an impact on your academic career.

Selection criteria

  • Clear explanation of the link between the research topic and the objectives of the scholarship (advancement of knowledge, responsible use of data, interpretability and explainability of AI algorithms)
  • Project methodology and feasibility (level of progress, financing, etc.)
  • Quality of the project (influence, promising, innovative, promising, etc.)
  • Quality of the application presentation (quality of writing, explanation of the project, level of popularization, etc.)
  • Excellence of the file (academic results, CV, list of publications, prizes & scholarships, etc.)

You must complete the online form.

In the appropriate section of the form, note that you will need to provide:

  • Your project timeline;
  • A summary of your research project (maximum 500 words);
  • Your up-to-date CV including your publications and communications;
  • A letter of recommendation to support your application, to demonstrate your progress or to confirm the importance of your project (e.g., supervisor, project director, professor, etc.).*

It is up to each candidate to identify the referee who will be best placed to demonstrate their research excellence, and to ensure that they will be able to provide the letter within the required timeframe.
